A guided Arizona elk hunt, or any western big game adventure represents a significant investment. Here are 5 tips for making the most of our next elk hunt. If hunters follow these guidelines, they will stand to significantly improve their chances of success – even in the face of tough conditions.

  1. Practice shooting and know your weapon.

Every guide has seen missed opportunities because hunters are using a new weapon, or because they haven’t practiced sufficiently. By the time the hunt arrives, you want to be extremely confident in your rifle or bow. Make sure you’re comfortable shooting from multiple positions, and in your hunting clothing.

  1. Have a tough mental attitude.

A hunter’s attitude and willingness to push their boundaries is a key factor in success. Some hunters simply don’t want to work for it. Having the best chance at success means early mornings, late evenings and sore muscles at the end of the day. Don’t forget to have fun. But remember that reward requires grit.

  1. Be ready for adventure.

At Antler Canyon Outfitters, we are proud to offer some incredibly memorable hunts. This country is unique and challenging. Being ready for the adventure and a willingness to try something new will go a long way toward success.

  1. Follow directions and move with discretion.

After every season, a hunting guide can tell you stories of missed opportunities because a hunter didn’t listen to direction or because they moved at the wrong time and spooked a big bull. To ensure your best odds for success, listen to your guide and be very conscious of your movements. This is especially important for archery elk hunters.

  1. Always be alert and ready.

A shot opportunity can come on the first morning, or in the closing minutes of the final day. The hard part is staying alert, even when conditions are tough. It’s easy to let your guard down and become discouraged. But it only takes a moment, and that opportunity can come anytime. Stay positive and be ready at all times.
